UNHEALTHY CHEMICALS
INSIDE YOUR HOME
Our lives are filled with way too much busy-ness. Have you noticed how frequently the response to our polite roll-off-the-tongue standard question of: How are you? is Busy. And you? Sad indictment for all of us Ive been there and done that. Too busy to slow down, tune in, and change gears enough to build an awareness of what really matters. Our health matters. And of course going to the gym and sipping on a green juice does contribute favourably. But there is more that we can be doing. If we all take a small step towards reducing our exposure to chemicals, especially in our own homes, then thats a positive step in the right direction. Of course we cant live in a toxic-free bubble in the world where life is absolutely clean and pure but we can take back some control.
Look at how we are all living. Well, maybe not you but a lot of us. One example comes to mind: we sleep on sheets and pillows that weve purchased simply because the buying process was quick, the price was right, and we were in a hurry. Do you know how many chemicals were used in manufacturing the bedding on which you and your family are now sleeping? The story isnt healthy. Choose natural fibers like cotton or linen and, wherever possible, select organic or at least fabric that carries an independent certification that it is free from harmful dyes and chemicals. Thats all a great start towards a healthier home. Reduce your exposure to toxins whenever you have a choice. Green your living space. Maybe it is going to cost a bit more than the cheaper alternative. Is it worth the effort? Yes, good health is worth the effort.
Check out your bath towels. What are they made from? Whenever I have bought new towels that I didnt consider properly, there is a strange odour about them. Yes, I wash them before using but the odour still lingers. Is that due to chemicals used during manufacture? Probably. Buy natural fiber bath towels and aim for organic whenever you can. They are healthier for you and your family, they will last longer, and a feeling of smugness may wash over you! Another step towards greening your living space Furniture, rugs, kitchen items take some quiet time one day and check them all out. Slowly but surely begin to replace them with natural items. Know what each product is made from, and bring your lifestyle into a more healthy range. Who said any of this was easy? Its not.
None of us have deliberately filled our homes with unhealthy chemicals. What we have done is to trust. We placed our trust in authorities and governments whom we believed had our best interests at heart. Time to re-think that and take back the reins; not everything available for us to buy is made with our health in mind. Sad but true.
Live well!
