COTTON VERSUS MICROFIBER

Most people probably spend more time considering what type of cleaning fluids to use as opposed to the fabric they use for cleaning. How important is the fabric we use to clean floors, counter tops and mirrors/glass? From an eco perspective microfiber is more eco-friendly than cotton cloths or disposable cloths. From a sanitizing point of view, microfiber is more effective. From the angle of ease and effectiveness, microfiber wins again. Why is this true?

How is microfiber more eco-friendly than cotton?

1. Microfiber lasts longer than cotton which also saves you money because you can use them for years and they will be as effective as the day you bought them. Disposable cleaning cloths accumulate in landfills and take a long time to breakdown.

2. Microfiber requires less water than cotton to wash. When cleaning microfiber we use a non-foaming degreasing soap. It rinses clean after 1 cycle in the washer or 1 dunk in a bucket. This saves water.

3. Microfiber dries 3x faster than cotton. Have you ever put a load of cotton bath towels in the dryer? The dryer runs on high for 60 minutes and when you check them they are still wet. If you put a load of microfiber bath towels in the dryer on low it will take less than 20 minutes to dry them. Of course, cleaning rags are smaller than bath towels but this is just how we demonstrate the amount of energy used on drying same sized towels made of these 2 difference fabrics cotton vs microfiber. Microfiber requires less gas or electricity to dry which saves energy.

How does microfiber clean and sanitize more effectively than cotton? Microfiber means microscopic sized fibers. The fibers are much thinner than a human hair. Cotton is like a fishing net with large holes. If you scoop sand, dust or microscopic germs they escape through the large holes. But, microfiber catches the sand, dust, microscopic germs and allergens.

How else can microfiber be used?

Microfiber towels come in a variety of weaves, sizes and colors. There are also many sizes of microfiber mops depending on the amount of surface area you are cleaning. Here are some of the other great things about microfiber as opposed to cotton. Microfiber glass towels wont streak or leave lint behind when used on mirror or glass. Microfiber all purpose towels can be used for cleaning or detailing vehicles and wont scratch any surface. Waffle weave microfiber is very absorbent and works well for dish drying and auto drying. Microfiber hair wraps or hair turbans extract water from your hair allowing it to dry faster and less subject to scorching by a hair dryer because it reduces dry time which also saves electricity. The wrap is lightweight and wont fall off your hair because it fastens with a button. Microfiber bath sheets and wash cloths are softer than cotton. Hospitals and clean rooms are migrating to microfiber. Other uses for microfiber
